Why should you activate Apple Pay in your Shopify store?

Apple Pay leads to higher conversion rates and makes your life easier. Customers using Shopify stores are looking for convenient, secure, and fast ways to pay. Don’t lose another customer because your store doesn’t offer the latest in payment methods. As of last June, all Shopify store owners now have the ability to activate Apple Pay for purchases. Learn more about why you should activate Apple Pay, and how to do it.

Get More Customers

Newer iPhone models have the option to use Apple Pay, which is more secure and faster than credit cards while allowing users to still claim rewards and have all of the benefits of their card memberships. Those who have started using Apple Pay have become loyal to it, and that’s good news for you.

Conversion rates are up to two-thirds higher with Apple Pay than with traditional credit card entry. That’s because Apple Pay helps customers avoid typing any credit card numbers or rifling through bags to find the card they want. It’s one of the fastest ways to pay, and minimises risk of identity theft due to Touch ID fingerprint recognition technology.

By offering Apple Pay, you’re making sure customers can use their favourite way to pay.

There's No Extra Cost To Offer Apple Pay

Shopify is offering Apple Pay for no extra service fee. You’ll still pay normal fees for credit cards, but nothing else.

Added Security for You and Your Shoppers

Apple Pay uses network tokenization instead of traditional credit card information submission. With each purchase, the software creates a “token” with a unique transaction number and a representation of the credit card, then sends it to the payment gateway. You won’t store any credit card information, and Apple can’t trace your customers’ personal information to specific purchases.

How Does Apple Pay Work?

iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac users have been switching to Apple Pay for digital transactions in stores, online, and through apps. Users upload their credit card information, which is then “tokenised” with a unique device number for them. Their card information is not stored on their phone, and instead is sent in a secure way to merchants. Purchases are authorised using the customer’s Touch ID fingerprint on their devices, making this the most secure (and fast) payment option available.

Shopify makes it easy for your online store to accept Apple Pay. You’ll get the same streamlined customer payments to your business bank account, with no additional cost to you.

How Do I Activate Apple Pay in My Shopify Online Store?

Letting your customers pay in the most convenient and secure way available is a no-brainer. More online shoppers are switching to Apple Pay, and are expecting retailers to accept it.

Shopify has made it easy to activate Apple Pay. Here’s how:

Before You Get Started

Before you get started, make sure you’re complying with the Apple Pay on the Web Acceptable Use Guidelines and that your server meets all of the Server Requirements. Apple requires that you include a Privacy Statement, which Shopify does for you already.

Activate Apple Pay in Shopify Admin Settings

As a Shopify online store member, you can skip most steps related to developers and programmers. All you need to do is activate Apple Pay in your admin settings

  1. Log In to your Shopify store
  2. From your admin, click Settings → Payments → Payment Gateway → Edit
  3. In the Digital Wallets Accepted section, tick the box next to the Apple Pay logo
  4. Save your settings

Tell Your Customers!

Let your customers know that you’re accepting Apple Pay using Apple’s official Apple Pay logos. We recommend making an announcement to any email lists or news boards you use to communicate with your shoppers. Any referral to Apple Pay must use Apple-approved text references, such as the capitalisation of both Apple and Pay.

Who Can Use Apple Pay?

Anyone with the following Apple devices can make purchases using Apple Pay. Macbook users without Touch ID can still use Apple Pay if they have a compatible Apple Watch, iPhone, or iPad.

  • iPhone (SE, 6, 6 Plus, or newer)
  • iPad (Pro, Air 2, mini 3, or newer)
  • Apple Watch
  • MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Midi 2010 or newer)
  • iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)

Are there any differences in how I process transactions?

No. Credit and debit card fees are still the same (with no additional fees to use Apple Pay), liability rules are still the same, and you still get all the great benefits of Shopify software.

With Apple Pay within apps and websites, liability for transactions may in fact shift to the issuer instead of the merchant, meaning you have even less to worry about.

How Do I Make Apple Pay a User-Friendly Experience?

Conversion rates are up to two-thirds higher when stores offer Apple Pay because customers love being able to pay securely with the touch of their finger. Make sure your customers know that you offer Apple Pay and that you feature the capability prominently during the checkout process. If you offer both a web store and an in-app store, integrate Apple Pay into both to avoid confusion.
