The Domain Name System. Every website has a numerical address (called an IP address), but you can purchase an actual name (elkfox.com) to be used instead of a string of numbers. You can get a domain name when you set up a website with any number of serviced hosts, including Shopify, Wordpress, Wix, SquareSpace, etc., or even less-serviced hosts like GoDaddy.
